Matthew 21:1-14 ~ Palm Sunday

Passage: Matthew 21:1-14
Service Type:

Bible Text: Matthew 21:1-14 | Preacher: Pastor Gene Eberhardy |      Last Sunday the LORD spoke to us from the scriptures in Matthew 21:1-14 concerning Christ’s Triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  The Sunday before Easter is the beginning of the celebration of “Holy Week” which begins with “Palm Sunday.”  Most people that I spoke with did not even know that last Sunday was Palm Sunday or that is was the beginning of “Holy Week.”  This is a growing evidence of the cultural shift in thinking of society away from the knowledge of God and Biblical truth.  This time is called in scripture “a falling away”, 2 Thessalonians 2:3.  As we look at the passage of our study we find that even the disciples did not realize that they are being a part of this history making moment fulfilling scripture, John 12:16.    The scripture they were fulfilling was Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
The voice of the LORD in my heart cries, “Are you a part of fulfilling prophecy?”  2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”  Are you involved in discipleship or do you just come on Sunday to listen and go?  A Church, especially this Church, is a congregation of disciples, those that are actively involved in leaning sound doctrine.  The teaching of doctrine is to happen here in Sunday school or disciple school and in our Wednesday and Thursday night meetings.  Jesus said “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me.”  When we become Christian we become disciples, those that follow the doctrines of Christ.  This is a continual life study learning the doctrines of Christ.  We are to study to show ourselves approved of God . . . rightly understanding and teaching the Word of God.  When I teach or preach the doctrines of Christ, I continually come into a greater understanding of what God is saying and what His will and His heart is.
The LORD took us to Luke 19:41-44 and spoke to us of the beginning of His triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  Before the LORD entered into Jerusalem for last time in His earthly ministry, He stopped on the crest of the Mount of Olives and looked down into the capital city of the people of God and cried bitterly.  He wailed and said, “If thou had known” the things that were provided for thy peace.  Oh, if you had known you would have been spared the coming judgment.  If you had just know the time of your visitation.  God had come to His people, Israel, in the person of Jesus Christ to bring peace between Him and keep them from the judgment of sin.
We know that they did not receive God’s sacrifice for sin, Jesus Christ.  “For God so loved the world that He gave (sacrificed) His only begotten Son….” John 3:16.  God had come to His people to lead them in a life of salvation.  “I am the Light of the world whoever follows me will not walk or live in darkness (sin) but will have the light of life”, i.e. a relationship with Jesus, a daily walk with Jesus in righteousness John 8:12.  The voice of the heart of the LORD cries to this Church, this community, to look, see and know that now it is the time of our visitation from God, the 2nd coming of Christ Jesus.
