Jeremiah 7:8-15

Passage: Jeremiah 7:8-15
Service Type:

Last Sunday the LORD spoke to us from His Holy Word,  Jeremiah 7:8-15, by His anointing of the Holy Spirit upon His servant.  The LORD pleads through Jeremiah for Israel to come back to Him in sincerity.  The situation of time of these words was under King Josiah who had a great epiphany at the age of twenty.  He had been King from his eighth year.   When he turned sixteen he apparently had his conversion and became a seeker and follower of the LORD.

In His endeavor to seek the LORD, he determined to clean up the Temple that his father had polluted with the worship and idols of the Baal gods of the heathen nations around them.  In the course of the cleansing the Book of the Law, the book of Deuteronomy, was found and read before King Josiah.  Hearing the words of God he determined to bring his people back to worship the only true God, Jehovah.  It was during this time of revival and reform the LORD saw the hearts of the people and sent Jeremiah to speak to them.

Though Josiah was bringing them back to God, the priests and the prophets (not Jeremiah, Zephaniah and a few others) were lying to the people telling all kinds of religious lies to make them feel that because they had returned to the Temple of God that all was well.  In Lamentations 2:14, Jeremiah reports one of the main things that caused Israel to be taken and destroyed was the prophets or preachers were teaching all kinds of vain things but not revealing to the people their sin.  This sin was what was bringing the judgment of God upon them in the form of Babylon approaching with their mighty conquering armies.  This was declared to them in Joel chapter two and Jeremiah 6:22.

In the passage before us Jeremiah 7:8, the LORD speaks to them and to us, “Ye trust in words that cannot profit.”   He was declaring the preaching of the lying prophets or preachers then and now would give you a false sense of peace but would not heal you of the sin, Jeremiah 6:14 and 8:11.  Today, the modern preaching of those who are of the “Church Growth Movement”, a brand of teaching that focuses on the wants of man and not on the wants of God, are bringing false hope to the people of God giving them peace with God when in reality they will have no peace because the preaching does not reveal the sin of the people that they may repent and be forgiven.  Jeremiah, a true prophet of God, does not go along with the popular preaching of “peace, peace” but declares, “Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?” Jeremiah 7:9-10

This is the type of preaching that the people of God need to hear because we are in this sinful flesh but it is the foolishness of preaching that God chooses to use to save us.  Our church is one of the rare churches left in the community of faith in Christ Jesus, but we have suffered the loss of many because we have taken the stand to make disciples and not attenders.  I thank you that you continue to stand with me as a congregation and the LORD to preach to us from His Holy Word and exhort us to holiness continually.
