Jeremiah 4:1-18

Passage: Jeremiah 4:1-18
Service Type:

The LORD spoke to us from Jeremiah 4:1-18.  In verse 1, the LORD said if we would return to Him He would keep us from being carried away.  He spoke to us that the return that He wanted was not one where we would come back to the faith but He was speaking that we would return to Him in a personal relationship.  He took us back to 3:22 where He had called for a return unto Him.  There we read also the heart of the Jewish people as they said, “Behold we come unto thee for thou art the LORD our God.” They confessed the shame they had brought upon themselves by worshiping the gods of the nations around them.

The LORD calls us who are His people today to return unto Him for the Church of Christ has been carried away with the abominations of this modern world.  An abomination is anything that carries us away from worshiping the LORD.  He is a jealous God who will not share you with another.  The LORD grieves as He beholds His creation following the culture of ungodly music and then copies it, brings it into His church and tries to make it godly by changing the words to make it Christian.  But, the attitude is not of the Spirit of God but is of the spirit of the world.

Another abomination that grieves the LORD is the world’s dress.  In Proverbs 7:10, the woman that meets the man in the “attire of a harlot” represents ungodly culture of the godless world of the flesh, dressing to lure and seduce mankind from being like the image of God we were created to be.  Christ-like dress is to dress modestly which means not to draw attention to yourself 1 Timothy 2:9 “And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves . . .” NLT.  The word modest in the Greek means “respectable.”

Another abomination that grieves the LORD is the obsession with “mammon.”  It is the pursuit of riches and the things of the rich life.  This abomination carries many away from the life of faith in Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 6:9-10.  Over my many years as a pastor I have had the joy of leading young men and women to faith in Christ and see them begin to grow in life of faith until they get a car.  Then I have seen it too often.  They can’t come to Church because they have to work on Sunday to pay for the car and gas.  Or, they only have Sunday off and they want to rest.  They can’t be late or miss work or they will lose their job but they can be late for Church or miss it.  They put their job, their mammon, before God. This is a grief and an abomination to the LORD.  These are only some of the modern abominations that carry the Christian away from a faith life in Christ.

Next, in Jeremiah 4:2, the LORD made the point that if the Christian would fear God the unbelievers would fear God, but there is no fear of God in the Church of Jesus because of the unbalanced, wrongly divided, teaching of the doctrine of grace.  The word “fear” means to reverence or to have the highest respect. It is apparent to the world that the Church does not respect and reverence the LORD.  His Word is ignored for the words of man.  His way of life is ignored for the ways of ungodly mankind.  If the Church would fear God, studying His Words and living His life then lost mankind would also fear God.  This is the message of the LORD.
