Jeremiah 3:6-14

Passage: Jeremiah 3:6-14
Service Type:

Bible Text: Jeremiah 3:6-14 | Preacher: Pastor Gene Eberhardy | Last Sunday the LORD spoke to us from Jeremiah 3:6-14 saying that we need to look at God’s heart as we consider this passage of scripture. God the Father has feelings as we do. He cries as we saw Jesus weep John 11:35. He is jealous. We are not to have relationships with unbelievers, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18. He loves us who He has created with His glory but has wrath against those who are His and live in the glory of the world. Hebrews 13:8 declares, “He is the same yesterday, today and forever”, so as we look at the passages before us the LORD is speaking to Israel and Judah. He is also speaking to Christianity down through the generations until our present time. So the LORD says with a broken heart, “I see you playing the harlot.” Beyond the aspect of the sexual experience, the harlot is one that has no loyalty to anyone but themselves and is intimate with anyone that will give them what they want.
The heart of the LORD is torn because His beloved is intimate with the world, 1 John 2:15. The Word of the LORD declares, “If one loves the world the love of the Father is not in Him, you can only have one true love, one master.” Matthew 6:24. Yet, as it was then and as it is now, the people that claim to be the children of God try to deny this truth and commit spiritual adultery i.e. being intimate with the things of the world while still declaring that they are the people of God. They are like the LORD’s description of Judah in verse 10 that her testimony that is a feignedly (false) declaration of love for God. It doesn’t fool anyone. The nations see them for what they are and God knows completely.
There are multitudes that profess the name of Christ and declare they are Christian while they only want Him for eternal life, like a woman that only wants a man for his money. They say, “He is my LORD”, while they do not do what He has commanded but follow after the world, living according to their own minds, their own will and worshipping the things of the world as they of Judah worshiped at the carved stones and wooden stocks of images. The LORD said from verse 14 that we do not understand that we are two that was made one.
When we entered into the covenant relationship with Him we became His bride. We became one with Him. The two are no longer individuals but one. It is written in 1 Corinthians 6:15, “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot?” Can we not see how what we think to be just living as the world is so hurtful to the person of God? How would you feel if you saw your spouse, fiancé, boyfriend or girlfriend out having pleasure with someone else and not you? Yet, without realizing it we do this when we partake in the pleasures of the world. We are to find our pleasures in the things that are from above not the things of this world, Colossians 3:1-2, ”If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
We are to love the LORD with all of our heart, all of our mind and all of our strength. If that is not in our heart to do then we are a pretender and do not fool God. Oh hear the heart of God as He cries unto His beloved people.
