Jeremiah 2:29-37

Passage: Jeremiah 2:29-37
Service Type:

The LORD first spoke to us from chapter 2 verses 29-30 speaking to us from His heart , pleading with us saying, “Why do you complain and accuse me saying; Your Word is a relic of the past and not up to speed for today, times have changed, you are of the past, your Law is not relevant for today.” “You say these things and sit in my Church and do what is right in your own eyes. You have rebelled against me. I have not turned away from you.” The LORD said, “I am abused by my children. You have no respect for me.” The LORD took us to Matthew 15:2-6 and reminded us of the 5th commandment to honor our parents.

Today, the view of American young people is that the elderly are an inconvenience. Jesus showed us from the scripture even in the church there is no teaching of respecting their elderly parents and the elders or leader in the Church, Hebrews 13:7, 17. In the passage in Matthew, He said to the religious leaders that they were transgressing the command of the LORD, specifically the 5th commandment by teaching their own man made traditions. This had caused their children to have hardened hearts toward the LORD and have no reverence for those that are called to preach and teach the Word of God to them.

In Jeremiah 5:10, they say that the prophets (preachers) are full of wind. The LORD said it was the same today with the Church. Reverence is not taught for God, not for His Word and not for elders. Proverbs 16:6 teaches that it is reverence that causes men to depart from evil. Where there is no reverence, there is no departing from evil.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, the LORD exhorts us to honor and esteem these prophets and preachers that are given by the LORD to be over us and to teach and preach to us. But, if the children hear the parents speaking with no respect for these leaders then they are going to have the same mind toward them and count them as worthless to them and thereby destroy the way that has been given to them to come to the LORD and follow Him.

The LORD reminded us of the time in Judges 2:7-13 where after Joshua and all of his generation which had come out of Egypt and seen the mighty works of God passed away that there rose another generation that knew not the LORD. They had no reverence for Him so they worshiped the gods of the heathen around them. Today the Church of the LORD Jesus is coming to the same place as they have not been taught the fear and reverence of the LORD by the past generation and have made a god of their own imagination, a Jesus that is like them. They do not worship the LORD and have a form of godliness but deny the power of God Jesus Christ.

In Jeremiah 2:31, the LORD spoke to us of two things in asking the question, “My people have I been a delinquent father to you?” The first thing He said was, “Where did the idea come from that at some point we were to be on our own. We are never to be our own master going on our own way. Proverbs 3:5-6 declares “Trust the LORD with all your heart, lean not to your own understanding, acknowledge the LORD in all of your ways and He will direct your path.” We are to be a people under authority having reverence for the LORD, our parents, our spiritual leaders and even our governmental leaders, Romans 13. The second thing the LORD showed us was a picture of HIS faithfulness to us by the parable of the “Prodigal son” we have left Him but He is waiting for us to come back Luke 15:11-32.
