Last week we started with the message of God by the Holy Spirit to the people of God from the message of Joel. The first thing the LORD wanted to speak to us about was in verse 3. This was what is called the “Oral Tradition” that the LORD had established from scripture, Exodus 13:6-14, 18:20, Deuteronomy 6:7, 2 Chronicles 17:7 and Psalm 145:4-12, a few to show the will of the LORD. The LORD spoke to us that in these modern times, the Oral Tradition has all but disappeared today because of radio, and television, computers and I-Phones, etc. The parent is first line of defense from the false teachings of the world. They are to teach their children the Laws of God’s Word so the children will not receive the Laws of men which seem right unto them but are the ways of death, Proverbs 14:12. This is one thing that I have endeavored to teach this congregation that they would learn the Ten Commandments, the Apostles Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. Teach them to their children and their grandchildren. This is a small thing but I believe it has fallen on deaf ears. Jesus said over and over again, “If you have ears hear, HEAR what the LAW says . . . . .” Please repent and continue the “Oral Tradition and learn these three things. Communicate them to others as well as the gospel.
Next, the LORD spoke to us from verse 4 concerning the locusts. Although, in Joel’s time the plagues of locusts did come, he was not speaking about a real plague that had come. He was using the imagery of the damage of their past plagues to speak to specifically Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel. The four images used are all in the Hebrew different stages of the locusts. Each stage gets worse as the plague grows until the land is destroyed. Using this image, the LORD took us to James 1:14-15. He showed us the damage of the plague of sin that has fallen on mankind.
Using the idea of locusts from Joel chapter one to illustrate, first we have the locust of the lust that is in every living human being since the Garden of Eden. The second locust is temptation which is the free choice that God has given us. We know what the Law of God says because it is in our conscious Romans 2:14-15. But, we are like Eve to whom the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil looks good. We have listened to the tempting words of the devil, which are continually living in the words that the world speaks to us today and we are tempted too. We are weak through our flesh, Romans 8:3. The next locust is the tempter, the devil, Ephesians 6:10-12. Then and now, he and his demons draw us away to lusts. When that locust has finished drawing us, the last locust, sin, brings death.
Joel had used this analogy to show Judah the damage of their sin and to warn them of the coming plague that would be the mighty army of Babylon, described in Jude chapter two, that will come upon them because of their sin. It is the same way today. The sin of the Church and the nation has brought on us the plague of sin, rejecting God’s ways and taking the way that seems right to men bringing death. This is happening today and the end of it will be death to the wonderful nation of America. God allowed this to come upon His precious Israel many times because they turned away from Him. God is no respecter of persons. What He did to His own precious Israel, He will do to us the nation called “one nation under God.” If you have ears to hear, HEAR.
