The LORD spoke to us from John 18:1-14 but, we only made it through verses one and two. In verse 1, from the phrase, “When Jesus had spoken these words” the LORD reviewed three main points from His prayer in John 17. The first was that He had asked the Father to keep us by His nature John 17:11. The word “Nature” refers to the life of God or to His Holy Spirit. Jesus reminds us that He had asked the Father to keep His disciples by the Life of the Spirit of God, the Spirit we had received when we were born again.
This is why we must be born again. It is His Spirit that brings the change in our lives. Living in the teachings and commandments of the LORD is life. Living in the ways of the world is death. It is the Spirit of God that leads us in the way of life and keeps us as Jesus prayed. He took us to the scripture, Galatians 5:16, that promises that if we will walk in The Spirit or His Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, the ways of the world; to want this or want to be like them etc. etc. In this verse, the LORD showed us that His Spirit in us and the mind of our flesh are contrary to one another.
As we go through the day the mind of the flesh has an agenda. The Spirit of God has an agenda. Both are completely opposite of the other. By having His Spirit we have the power to overcome the mind of the flesh. This option is like having a passing gear in your car. When you need to overcome the slow moving car in front of you, you can press the pedal and have the power. In the same way, when we have the Holy Spirit through the new birth we have the option that when the mind of the flesh is leading us in the vanity of the world to sin bringing death, we can chose the way of the Holy Spirit and have the power to overcome the lust of the way of the world.
Next, He prayed that we would be sanctified or separated by the truth, John 17:17. This means that we would be separated from the frivolous life and the lust of the world. We would be separated from the lust of the flesh and the pride of life, 1 John 2:15-16. We would be separated by the teachings of His Word that we follow his word and not the ways of the world.
The third thing He reminded us of from His prayer was that we would be protected by His Word or His teachings John 17:15-17. When we live in His Word or teachings we are protected by His covering. When we leave His Word and follow the ways of the world we are not under His protection because of our disobedience.
In John 18:1, Jesus talks about the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus is called “The Last Adam” in 1 Corinthians 15:45. The first Adam was tempted in the Garden of Edom and followed the way of the flesh, the devil. But, the Last Adam was also tempted in the Garden of Gethsemane, Luke 22:39-46, and chose the way of the Spirit by laying down His Life and taking up His cross, taking the full cup of God’s wrath for sin to give us salvation. We have the battle of temptation as He did and we have received the Holy Spirit to choose as Christ did the way of the Spirit of God.
