The LORD spoke to us from Joel 2:18-32. He started with the word “Then” from verse eighteen. This word refers back to verses 12-17 where the LORD cries out to His people to repent not by the outward expression but by tearing their heart as He had said, “Circumcise your heart and not your flesh.” The LORD calls us to turn our heart toward Him. Jesus said in Revelation 3:20, “Behold I stand at the door and knock if anyone will open the door, (i.e. the door of your soul,) I will come in.” The church, like Israel, are those who have taken the name of the LORD in vain living like those that walk according to the course of the world or as we would say, the course that the godless of the world follow.
Who is that? They follow, “the prince of the power of the air”, Ephesians 2:2. This is the devil. We were born into a godless world and grew up thinking that it was normal but because we are Christians we had an experience with the Spirit of the LORD Jesus being born again. Now it seems many that bear His name i.e. Christian have gone back walking or living as the godless of the world.
The LORD calls us by His mercy to turn back to Him before He acts with the wrath of His judgment. In verses 19-26, the LORD elaborates on all that He will do for us. Us refers to those that will honor their Father and follow the commands of Jesus the Christ. All that He will do for us can be summed up in the New Testament scriptures of Philippians 4:19. He will supply all our needs, Matthew 6:32-33. He will add to us everything that life demands that we will be taken care of.
From verse 27, the LORD pleaded with us of His desire to dwell in us. Then He took us to 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 and showed us what it takes to have the LORD truly dwell in us. We must have no fellowship with the godless unrighteous that walk after their fallen mind. We cannot have any communion, meaning partnership, with those that follow the life of godless darkness. Darkness refers to the life of those that do not have the light, the understanding of the righteous life of God. How can righteousness and unrighteousness walk together? They can’t it is impossible just as light and dark cannot be in the same room. A room that is dark where things cannot be seen becomes a room where everything is visible when the light comes. The LORD and the devil have nothing in common, nothing they agree on. That is the way it must be for us. How can we agree on the life that the world follows? What can we share with those that are in darkness following the god of this world, 2 Corinthians 4:4, the devil? In what can we like, love, talk about, invest with or enter into agreement with them? And finally what agreement can we who are the temple of God have with an idol which is the temple of the devil? It cannot be!!!
The LORD cries to us to come out from among them and do not touch any of their conversation, business or ways of life. This brings us back to what He said at the first, tear our heart or repent turn away from them and He will dwell in us and be a Father to us providing all our needs. In verse 32, He says then we will become His children, His servants, and the place where all can come and call upon the name of the LORD and receive His salvation.
